Translators translate texts into another language, usually from a foreign language into their mother tongue. They take care to produce a translation which corresponds to the original in terms of content, language, style and type of text. Translators translate many different types of text, such as packaging labels, annual reports, conference proceedings, and journalistic, scientific and technical material. They may be self-employed, freelance or employed. The federal translation service is an important employer. Jobs are offered by major companies and translation agencies as well as by public bodies. Few people make a living as literary translators. Graduates in subjects that come under the heading of language and literature studies also face competition on the labour market from graduates of the translation and interpreting schools.
